Negotiations to resume as Northern Ireland talks near deadline

first_imgTALKS BETWEEN NORTHERN Ireland’s political parties and a former US diplomat – aimed at making new arrangements on issues such as parades and flying flags – are to resume this morning.Originally due to begin at 6am, they are now set to kick off at 10am in Belfast. The talks are between former US diplomat Richard Haass and Professor Meghan O’Sullivan of Harvard University, and the leaders of five of the North’s political parties.Haass had said at the weekend that a deal must be reached today on the issues.Yesterday, the White House urged political parties to reach an agreement in the talks, with a spokesperson for the National Security Council in the US saying the discussions are at a ‘critical juncture’.Talks are due to be held for six hours today. Haass has described the differences between the parties as “difficult but not intractable” and appeared hopeful that agreement could be reached before the deadline.Earlier, Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness of Sinn Féin said failure would be an ‘unforgivable option’ while the SDLP lead negotiator Alex Atwood said the talks cannot be allowed to unravel ‘at the 11th hour’.Talks were not held yesterday as the DUP do not work on a Sunday for religious reasons.Read: White House says Northern Ireland talks are at ‘critical juncture’>Read: No all-party talks today as Haass sets agreement deadline of noon, Monday >last_img read more

Credit union leaders tell Heck they want in on federal program

first_imgDemocratic congressional candidate Denny Heck met with credit union officials in Vancouver on Tuesday for a briefing on how changes in federal regulations might allow them to play a bigger role in reviving Southwest Washington’s economy. Heck, an Olympia business entrepreneur who once worked for a Vancouver credit union, got an earful from eight representatives of the nonprofit, membership-based lending institutions. Credit union leaders are incensed that they were excluded from the federal Small Business Lending Fund Act, a newly enacted law that will provide $30 billion to community banks to help them provide credit to small businesses. They want Congress to raise the cap on the amount they can lend to businesses. Under a 1998 law, federally chartered credit unions’ loans to businesses are capped at 12.24 percent of total assets. An amendment to this year’s Wall Street financial reform law that would have raised the cap to 27 percent failed in the U.S. Senate in the face of opposition from the banking industry. Most CEOs said they’re already at their lending caps and can’t make new loans to businesses that are struggling to expand in the current credit crunch.last_img read more

McLarens new grand tourer shows off its shapely body

The “McLaren of Grand Tourers” was initially teased wearing heavy camouflage, but now, the coupe’s striptease has officially begun. McLaren’s new GT is out and about in a trio of images released Wednesday, and it’s showing off its curves.Discussions ’round the Roadshow water cooler suggested this car might just be a 720S-based grand tourer — think 720GT, in the way the 570GT exists alongside the 570S. But from what we can see in these photos, it appears this grand tourer is actually something quite different.Enlarge ImageThe GT’s slim headlights look great. McLaren First and foremost, check out the sleeker headlamps, which appear to be far more attractive than what you’ll find on the 570 and 720. Move around to the back and you’ll see the rakish roofline, likely made up of a large, glass hatchback, similar to the 570GT. Slim, horizontal, LED taillamps flank the wide rear, and the car’s exhaust outlets are placed low, beneath the bumper — a big change from the between-the-taillights outlets of the 720S, or the ultra-cool, top-exit pipes of the 600LT.McLaren isn’t confirming any of the GT’s details just yet, not even the car’s name. When the GT was first announced in March, the automaker only said the grand tourer would “share its DNA with the 250-mph McLaren Speedtail.” Given the impressive numbers that hypercar puts down, I’m expecting good things. The GT will debut sometime in the coming months and McLaren says the camouflage will start to come off on April 30. Tesla Tesla has filed a patent application for a new wiring architecture that would make its cars easier for robots to assemble, according to a report published Monday by Electrek. When Tesla was in the process of ramping up production for the Model 3 and attempted to employ even more automation than it had with previous models, the robots had trouble with laying out the long, floppy wiring harness and Tesla had to revert back to having humans perform the process.Tesla’s immediate solution at the time was to shrink the size of the various harnesses into smaller sections that were less complicated to install in the vehicle. The new architecture design iterates on that idea by breaking the harnesses out into subassemblies with controllers. This also allows the harness pieces to be made more rigid, which will ease installation for robots. These subassemblies can be preassembled and placed into vehicle components — Tesla uses the example of doors in its patent application — so that the only electrical connection that needs to be made on the line is the one between the door subassembly and the main loom. This type of modular construction would also reduce the number of individual wires in the harness. Other benefits could include the ability to upgrade a vehicle’s electrical components and systems more easily since it doesn’t need to affect the entire harness.Tesla’s design is still in the application process for a US patent, but it is neat and could represent a significant labor cost savings if it comes to fruition. 2019 Jaguar XE SV Project 8 review: The lovable lunatic Tesla Teslalast_img read more

National Guard focuses on increasing operations during tour of Nome Brevig Mission

first_imgMajor General Laurie Hummel with the DMVA and the Alaska National Guard stands beside Verdie Bowen during a public presentation at the VFW in Nome. (Photo by Davis Hovey, KNOM )Major General Laurie Hummel, the Adjutant General of the Alaska National Guard and Commissioner of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, is touring through Western Alaska this week, along with her military entourage from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.Listen nowThe team has many goals for their visit, some of which include bolstering National Guard forces in rural Alaska as well as seeking out veterans. Colonel John James, the Commander of the Alaska State Defense Force, or ASDF, said:“One of the things that we wanted to accomplish while we were here is talking to elders, community leadership, about starting and establishing an Alaska State Defense Force attachment here at the armory in Nome.”Colonel James said emergency preparedness and response is a major component of ASDF:“It is the mission of Alaska State Defense Force to augment, to enable, to be a force multiplier for the Alaska National Guard during emergencies, and we are also building a domain awareness capability and capacity,” James said. “We want to do that throughout the entire state of Alaska. So we are looking specifically for veterans or retirees in the community. We greatly appreciate folks who are trained, and we also appreciate the contributions of non-priors, so we’ll train those folks up.”In addition to recruiting more National Guard members, the purpose of Hummel and her team’s visit to Nome, Brevig Mission, and Teller, is to survey inactive National Guard facilities.According to the Major General, there used to be 86 armories in operation throughout Alaska, but that number has dropped.“As of today, we have 17 active armory facilities around the state,” Hummel said. “And so the facilities at Brevig Mission and Teller are two of the facilities that have been earmarked for repurposing. Repurposing someday for the use by communities, or other state agencies — really whoever has the ability to maintain them and wants to use them.”The operations and training officer for the Alaska Army National Guard, Colonel Lee Knowles, spent years of his life serving and living in Nome. He recalls that not only were there more active facilities in Western Alaska but more active servicemen and women too:“There used to be a substantial footprint of soldiers here in the Norton Sound region in past years. Unfortunately, because of changing global security environment and requirements for national security, the size of the army, that force structure kind of shrank and went away. And one of the reasons why we’re out here right now, is to try to reinvigorate that to the extent that resources will allow us to do so.”Verdie Bowen, the Director of Veteran’s Affairs, concurs with Colonel Knowles and also pointed out that the Alaska Territorial Guard (ATG) originated in the Norton Sound region.Bowen is traveling with the entourage to reach out to some of the 1,600 ATG veterans that have not yet been given their honorable discharges.“It’s quite an arduous task, because number one: there’s a lot of family members that aren’t there. Number two: some of the villages are gone,” Bowen said. “And the last part is, that when they disbanded them — actually here is where they did the disbandment, here in Nome — the issue that we ran into was there really wasn’t a very good record of who they were, and so it took us several years to get that master list certified and accredited through the United States Army so they would go ahead and issue those discharges.”According to Bowen, once his office has finished contacting all ATG veterans on the master list, there will most likely be a couple thousand names who were not included on the list, but his team won’t give up until 6,400 members are properly discharged. For veterans of the Alaska Territorial Guard to receive an honorable discharge, Bowen said only a birth date or date of death needs to be put on file in order to find a record of military service.Bowen, Major General Hummel, and the Colonels, along with the accompanying service men and women, plan on visiting elders and school children during their stop in Brevig Mission and Teller today.last_img read more

Rohingya crisis triggers communal tensions across Myanmar

first_imgA Rohingya refugee man pulls a child as they walk to the shore after crossing the Bangladesh-Myanmar border by boat through the Bay of Bengal in Shah Porir Dwip, Bangladesh, on 10 September 2017. — ReutersCommunal tensions appeared to be rising across Myanmar on Monday after two weeks of violence in Rakhine state that have triggered an exodus of about 300,000 Rohingya Muslims, prompting the government to tighten security at Buddhist pagodas.A mob of about 70 people armed with sticks and swords threatened to attack a mosque in the central town of Taung Dwin Gyi on Sunday evening, shouting “this is our country, this is our land”, according to the mosque’s imam, Mufti Sunlaiman.“We shut down the lights in the mosque and sneaked out,” the mufti, who was in the mosque at the time, told Reuters by phone. The government said in a statement that the mob was dispersed after police with riot shields fired rubber bullets.Rumors have spread on social media that Muslims, who represent about 4.3 percent of the Buddhist-majority country’s population of 51.4 million, would stage attacks on Sept. 11 to avenge violence against the Rohingya in northern Rakhine.Attacks by Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) militants on police posts and an army base on 25 August provoked a military counter-offensive and a mass migration of villagers into the Cox’s Bazar region of southern Bangladesh.Myanmar says its security forces are carrying out clearance operations to defend against ARSA, which the government has declared a terrorist organisation.Human rights monitors and fleeing Rohingya say the army and Rakhine Buddhist vigilantes have mounted a campaign of arson aimed at driving out the Rohingya, whose population is estimated at around 1.1 million. The government said on Saturday that it would take legal action against anyone spreading rumors that could lead to religious conflict.Security has been stepped up on Mandalay Hill, a peak overlooking the city of Mandalay studded with pagodas that is popular with Buddhist pilgrims, the Myanmar Times reported. In social media groups, Muslims have voiced fear that other mosques will come under attack and proposed tighter security, according to posts seen by Reuters. Muslim elders have urged people to show restraint, the posts showed.Tensions between Buddhists and Muslims have simmered since scores were killed and tens of thousands displaced in communal clashes accompanying the onset of the country’s democratic transition in 2012 and 2013.But after ARSA attacks on police posts last October, tensions have risen. In Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, Buddhist nationalists raided two madrassas in April and forced authorities to close them down on the grounds they did not have a permit to operate as a place of worship. In May, several nationalists led by the Patriotic Monks Union raided flats in a Yangon district with a large Muslim population, igniting scuffles that were only broken up when police fired shots into the air.ROHINGYA TRAPPED ON MYANMAR SIDEMyanmar on Sunday rebuffed a ceasefire declared by ARSA to enable the delivery of aid to thousands of displaced people in northern Rakhine, declaring simply that it did not negotiate with terrorists.Thousands of Rohingya in the north-western state have been left without shelter or food, and many are still trying to cross mountains, dense bush and rice fields to reach Bangladesh. The estimate of new arrivals in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday was 294,000 and UN officials working there said there were discussions under way to revise up the prediction made last week that it would reach 300,000.Thousands of Rohingya refugees are still stranded on the Myanmar side of the River Naf, which separates the two countries, with the biggest gathering south of the Rakhine state town of Maungdaw, monitors and sources in the area told Reuters.A Maungdaw resident told Reuters by phone that about 500 houses south of the town were set on fire early on Monday. The people – many hungry and exhausted after a days-long march through the mountains and bushes in the monsoon rain – have been unable to cross because of a crackdown on Bangladeshi boatmen charging 10,000 taka ($122) or more, sources said. The significant number of people in the area raises fears of a further influx into Bangladesh, where humanitarian agencies and local communities are already struggling. The Myanmar government has announced it will build camps for internally displaced people and provide humanitarian assistance. Details of the plans have not been spelled out and it is not clear that people would be willing to live in the camps rather than cross to Bangladesh.last_img read more

5 Reasons to Be Excited for Final Fantasy XV

first_img Cool Gifts for ‘Final Fantasy’ LoversGEEK PICK: Final Fantasy 15 Pocket Edition HD Stay on target It’s hard to believe, but Final Fantasy XV has finally been released after languishing in development for the better part of a decade. Any main Final Fantasy game will get a fair amount of anticipation from fans but given how long this title has been in the works; it could very well be the most anticipated entry in years.Final Fantasy games are known for always delivering a unique experience but FFXV is shaking things up like never before. Combat has received a complete overhaul and offers players a greater amount of freedom. This same freedom extends to the game’s gargantuan, explorable world. In many ways, this is the most “modern” of the Final Fantasy to be released.Final Fantasy XV has a lot to be excited about so here are the main reasons we think you’ll want to play the game.Real-Time CombatThe main Final Fantasy series is known for its turn-based battles but this familiar gameplay mechanic is being scrapped in favor of real-time action. Though this may be off-putting for veterans of the series, this direct form of combat should help bring in folks who aren’t fond of waiting for their turn to attack.Despite being in real-time, combat hasn’t lost any of its strategic nature. Players have to figure out what weapons and magic spells work best against certain types of foes. Getting a feel for your surroundings is crucial since you’ll need to know where you can teleport to when you have to recharge your health and magic. While combat does retain the strategic nature of previous titles, players will still have to react quickly in the heat of battle. In order to stay alive, players will have to perform specific button prompts at the right moment in order to deal greater damage or to evade certain attacks. Players can also have their allies render assistance during crucial moments in order to get the drop on their foes.Open world road tripOpen world games are all the rage these days so it shouldn’t be surprising that most of FFXV takes place within a massive explorable land. The last two mainline Final Fantasy games (FFXII and FFXIII) both had varying degrees of open world gameplay but FFXV delivers the type of open world experience modern audiences expect, albeit with a decidedly Japanese slant. What makes this open world unique is how it blends fantasy and reality. As one drives around in their car, they’ll pass by old-school gas stations while gigantic bird-like creatures fly overhead, or gaze upon average desert terrain with a backdrop of mountains that look as if they were carved by massive hands. Players will be able to explore dungeons, sewers, forests, and all other manner of locations that mix the real with the surreal. And like any worthy open world game, folks can find themselves spending long hours simply exploring the land without even touching the main storyline.Epic BromanceIn the past, Final Fantasy games featured characters that were brought together by fate to save the world. Some became great friends and even lovers, but they almost always started off as strangers. The characters in FFXV are different in that they’ve known each other for most of their lives and are essentially a family. The bond between the characters comes through random bits of dialogue they spout during the course of the game. As you explore, you’ll hear the four fellas remark about their current situation, bust each other’s chops for fun, or even tell inside jokes that you’re not privy to. This may not seem that important to the overall story of the game, but the relationship between Noctis, Prompto, Gladiolus, and Ignis is arguably what will endear Final Fantasy XV to those who play it.Stunning presentationEven going back to the original game on the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Final Fantasy series has been known for its incredible art and sound design. FFXV is no exception to this rule, and it is delivering some truly stunning current-gen graphics alongside a memorable and diverse soundtrack.Despite being relegated to consoles, FFXV is graphically on par with some PC games on the market. This game blurs the line between computer generated cutscenes and in-game graphics — making it difficult to distinguish the two. Everything from human characters, monsters, landscapes, and magic effects are a sight to behold. Those who own a PlayStation 4 Pro will be treated to the very best version of the game since they will be able to play it in 4K and in High Dynamic Range. The soundtrack is on par with the graphics. Much like the game world, the music is a blend of fantastical and real, which each locale having its own distinct music. Along with the original soundtrack, there are a number of real-world songs scattered throughout the game. Hearing “Stand By Me” from the car’s radio while driving past a giant monster may seem odd, but it somehow works.Champion of Japanese Role Playing GamesWith every new Final Fantasy release, fans inevitably ask: “Will this be the game that makes JRPGs popular again?” Final Fantasy XV should be judged on its own merits but many will look to it as a champion — or perhaps even savior — of the JRPG genre. Given how this series is arguably the most high profile of its genre and how that same genre has been all but forgotten by mainstream audiences who prefer RPGs from Western studios, this sort of thinking isn’t entirely unwarranted. It is doubtful that FFXV will create the JRPG Renaissance fans of the genre have longed for, but it can still shine a spotlight on why these role playing games are so beloved and what they’re capable of delivering — especially when they have a massive budget and the full backing of a AAA developer. FFXV does have strong Western influences with its real-time combat and open world but within its DNA lies the elements that make JRPGs uniquely special. Those who are tired of playing JRPGs on handheld devices or who want a game in the genre to actually do something fresh can look to FFXV as a beacon for others in the genre to follow.Final Fantasy XV is available now for $59.99 from Amazon.last_img read more

British team devises method for separating carbon nanotubes cheaply

first_img Developing seeds for growing whole gardens of identical SWCNTs Journal information: ACS Nano Citation: British team devises method for separating carbon nanotubes cheaply (2012, January 19) retrieved 18 August 2019 from ( — When single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are made, they come out in both metallic and semiconducting material form. Unfortunately, different applications require one or the other of these materials, but not both, which means they need to be separated. Even more unfortunately, efforts to do so have proven to be very expensive. Now, though, due to the efforts of a British team of physicists, as they describe in their paper in ACS Nano, a new method has been devised that allows SWCNTs to be separated cheaply enough to allow for bulk manufacturing. Explore further More information: Scalable Method for the Reductive Dissolution, Purification, and Separation of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes, ACS Nano, Article ASAP. DOI: 10.1021/nn2041494AbstractAs synthesized, bulk single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) samples are typically highly agglomerated and heterogeneous. However, their most promising applications require the isolation of individualized, purified nanotubes, often with specific optoelectronic characteristics. A wide range of dispersion and separation techniques have been developed, but the use of sonication or ultracentrifugation imposes severe limits on scalability and may introduce damage. Here, we demonstrate a new, intrinsically scalable method for SWNT dispersion and separation, using reductive treatment in sodium metal-ammonia solutions, optionally followed by selective dissolution in a polar aprotic organic solvent. In situ small-angle neutron scattering demonstrates the presence of dissolved, unbundled SWNTs in solution, at concentrations reaching at least 2 mg/mL; the ability to isolate individual nanotubes is confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Spectroscopy data suggest that the soluble fraction contains predominately large metallic nanotubes; a potential new mechanism for nanotube separation is proposed. In addition, the G/D ratios observed during the dissolution sequence, as a function of metal:carbon ratio, demonstrate a new purification method for removing carbonaceous impurities from pristine SWNTs, which avoids traditional, damaging, competitive oxidation reactions. It was only recently that a team at Stanford University devised a means for separating and sorting the two distinct forms of the SWCNTs, a breakthrough that had researchers dreaming of such exotic applications as artificial skin. Sadly though, the process they devised would have cost billions to produce just a kilo of the stuff, which of course very quickly put a damper on the development of applications. Now though, the team in Britain from London’s Imperial College, led by Milo Shaffer, has figured out a way to do the job cheaply, and it’s all due to researchers from another lab at University College, discovering that Buckminster fullerenes dissolve in ammonia. To develop the new process, teams from both labs worked together. The new process works like this. First the nanotubes are dissolved in a sodium and ammonia solution to purify and pull them apart, creating what they call a “nanotubide” solution; afterwards, the ammonia is removed. The result is a salt and nanotubide dry powder. The team then adds dimethylformamide to the powder which causes a portion of the salt-laden nanotubide to dissolve. By using just the right concentration in the original solution, the team has found that they can retrieve material that is mostly metallic SWCNT from the dissolved salt. And that, in all its simplicity, is pretty much all there is to it.Besides allowing for SWCNTs to be made cheaply, the new process also eliminate the need for using a centrifuge which was a part of the process used in earlier methods and sometimes caused damage to the final product. Also, because this new method appears to be ready to go as is, the team has already licensed it to Linde, an industrial gas company. This all means that those initial dreams of exotic products may now finally come to fruition, though of course, most of them, such as artificial skin, are still likely to be some ways off, as now that cheaply made SWCNTs can be had, there is still all the research ahead in actually using them to create such end products. © 2011 This document is subject to copyright. Haiti marks fourth anniversary of quake that killed 250000

And he attended a ceremony at 4:53 p.m., the moment the quake struck four years ago.“Thirty-five seconds, … that’s all the time that was needed, on Jan. 12, 2010, to spread darkness over Haiti. We were all in tears, plunged into despair that day,” Martelly said.Wearing white as he addressed thousands of Haitians gathered for a minute of silence in memory of the catastrophe’s victims, Martelly also thanked “the friends of Haiti who came from all over to help.”He called for Haiti’s 10 million people to unite for reconstruction, saying the Caribbean nation would “move forward with our resources in rebuilding.”“Haiti is like the reed; it bends but does not break,” he said.Flags were to be lowered throughout the country and businesses closed to mark the anniversary, while radio and television stations were encouraged to broadcast programming suitable to the emotional occasion. The devastation is still keenly felt in Port-au-Prince, the teeming capital of the Americas’ poorest country.Faced with criticism over the slow pace of rebuilding, especially of administrative buildings – including the legislative palace – Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe had pledged last week to step on “the accelerator to advance the main projects.”But church ministers on Sunday railed against the time it was taking to reconstruct buildings that were largely leveled throughout the capital.“We are still waiting for reconstruction of the country that has been promised by authorities, but we are certain of getting the reconstruction promised by God,” one pastor told his congregation.Opposition critics have attacked the government for failing to make better progress on rebuilding.“We find ourselves again this Jan. 12, 2014 with sentiments of strong concern … over our true engagement in the politics of reconstructing the country,” Senate President Dieuseul Simon Desras said in a statement questioning the government’s “ability to respond to social needs.”The government says a large portion of millions donated by governments and organizations the world over was spent on the post-earthquake emergency and not for reconstruction.“We were lucky to have help from Venezuela. Most of our projects were accomplished with Venezuelan money. With slim means, we accomplished a lot of things,” Lamothe told AFP, expressing hope that the international community would make good on its aid pledges. He also criticized the international community for failing to provide promised aid of nearly $9 billion.“If the international community had fulfilled its commitment, we would have accomplished 10 times more,” Lamothe said. “But Haiti is better off four years after the earthquake even if there remains much to be done.”Haiti has recently seen an increase in anti-government protests, some breaking out into violent clashes.Protesters have called for the resignation of Martelly, who has been in office since 2011, and are demanding better living conditions.Plans to rebuild Port-au-Prince have been presented to the public, but the construction never happened.“Rebuilding the capital will require the creation of a new downtown and the creation of an administrative center,” Lamothe said. Some 42 public buildings were among those flattened during the earthquake, and most are still lying wrecked. first_imgBook Review: Gorgeous novel explores adopting a foster child This cover image released by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt shows “The Risk of Us,” a novel by Rachel Howard. (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt via AP) “The Risk of Us,” (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) by Rachel HowardWith breathtaking brevity, Rachel Howard’s debut novel, “The Risk of Us,” illuminates the joys, challenges, fears and frustrations of adopting a foster child. And while she delves into the minutiae of “the system” and the differences of opinion about parenting styles, her deceptively thin volume is about much more than plunging into parenthood.Howard masterfully illuminates how parenthood manages to bend even the most solid of marriages and expose insecurities about past relationships, including those from childhood. In “The Risk of Us,” the unnamed narrator and her husband, Sebastian, choose 7-year-old, Maresa, “a brown-haired gremlin with arms flung like she could fly off the page” from a binder labeled “Children Available.” They spend the next year learning about Maresa, themselves and each other as well as the clearly dysfunctional foster care system in California.Howard’s first book was a memoir, which isn’t surprising given the pages of her novel brim with emotion and vulnerability. She and her husband also are the adoptive parents of a former foster child.Howard’s writing has a unique rhythm that feels choppy, even disjointed at first, but as the reader adjusts, her phrasing and word choices make each page sing. Not a single word is wasted here. There’s no bloat. Her writing is spare and elegant, yet it beautifully conveys intensity and emotional depth. When the narrator comforts her husband: “My lamb. Salty wet face, closed eyes. Writhing side to side. . And then his chest is heaving against my cheek, and the sound we are making is called a sob.”When Maresa throws a tantrum: “I am not baffled by this screaming girl, but my comprehension is no help. She is retching, she is shaking, she is spitting up bile.”The only misstep comes near the end of the novel after what’s called “the day of the policeman” and the parents reconsider adopting Maresa. But it’s a small lapse in a simply gorgeous novel.Kim Curtis, The Associated Press by Kim Curtis, The Associated Press Posted Apr 15, 2019 9:16 am PDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Emaillast_img read more

Entertainment News download Indian Express App More Related NewsWritten by Shamik Chakrabarty | Kolkata | Updated: September 29 2016 1:47 pm Gautam Gambhir the third-choice opener had joined the Indian cricket team in Kolkata on Wednesday evening Top News There was a difference of opinion over picking a replacement for the injured opener KL Rahul for the remaining two Tests of the ongoing series According to a BCCI insider Karnataka middle-order batsman Manish Pandey was initially considered before the selectors preferred a like-for-like candidate; with the understanding that Shikhar Dhawan would be chosen ahead of Gambhir in the playing XI Dhawan lost his place as Murali Vijay’s opening partner following Rahul’s emergence in the West Indies but he has been part of the original squad and is likely to get in by default India had an optional training session at Eden Gardens on Wednesday and Dhawan along with Virat Kohli Ajinkya Rahane Rohit Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha had a long stint at the nets The third-choice opener Gambhir had landed in Kolkata on Wednesday evening Alongside the senior players Haryana offie Jayant Yadav Ishant Sharma’s replacement for the second Test enjoyed a decent workout Here’s a boy who has been given the chance to have a feel of the Indian dressing room because he performed well in domestic cricket And maybe the selectors missed a trick by not handing out a similar opportunity to a young opener instead of bringing in a player in the twilight of his career The Indian Test team has been going through a purple patch since Sri Lanka last year And this success presented the selectors with the ideal scenario to blood in youngsters with the likes of Mayank Agarwal and Abhinav Mukund providing options The erstwhile selection committee led by Sandeep Patil had recalled Ashish Nehra and Yuvraj Singh ahead of the World T20 earlier this year But back then India had hit a slump in limited-overs cricket Several young players had failed to rise to the required standards And with the World T20 approaching they decided to pick horses for courses The situation in Tests is different Serial victories have opened up scopes for experiments Also flying in someone like Gambhir as a standby option — he has 56 Tests behind him — looks a little odd More so since Rahul’s absence doesn’t impact the opening combination experience-wise Vijay is 32 and he has played 40 Tests Over the last couple of years he has proved himself as one of the most assured Test opener in the world If Vijay were out Gambhir’s inclusion would have offered logic under the pretext of experience But with a tried and tested opening pair in place — Vijay and Dhawan have been opening the innings for India since March 2013 — a younger player might have deserved the apprenticeship According to the source Gambhir’s ability to play spin was a major reason for his recall “He is still an excellent player against spin and given that we have a long home season (13 Tests) this term it’s not a bad idea to have him in the scheme of things” he said India have put on 400-plus scores in an innings only twice in their last 10 completed Test matches In Sri Lanka last year Rangana Herath and Tharindu Kaushal had 28 Indian scalps between them Then South Africa’s Imran Tahir Simon Harmer Dean Elgar and Dane Piedt accounted for 33 wickets on Indian pitches Even in the West Indies Roston Chase had a five-wicket haul At Green Park in Kanpur also the hosts were put under pressure by Mitchell Santner Ish Sodhi and Mark Craig in the first innings Yes Gambhir will probably counter spin on a turning deck a lot better than some of the younger Indian batters But teams usually aim to move forward after overcoming a transition phase Good but others better The other logic during the discussion related to Rahul’s replacement was that Gambhir has been scoring runs in domestic cricket The Delhi left-hander had 488 runs at 3753 in eight matches in the last season’s Ranji Trophy In the Duleep Trophy this year he made 356 runs at 7120 in three matches Compare these with Agarwal who had 417 runs at 5212 in five Ranji matches last term and 420 runs in three Duleep matches As for Abhinav Mukund he missed last season’s Ranji Trophy but finished with an average of 8266 in the Duleep Trophy Pandey was a favourite to come in for Rahul albeit as a middle-order replacement A section felt that his quality — he was also fresh from his 77 against Australia A in an unofficial Test in Brisbane earlier this month — should be rewarded But the Gambhir-backers managed to drive home their point “Age shouldn’t be a factor Gambhir is experienced and he is scoring runs in domestic cricket” former chief selector Kiran More told this paper Interestingly however
