Print Friendly Version Story Links The Varsity Blues women’s water polo team completed another perfect season by defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees 10-4 to capture the 2019 NCWP championship on Sunday afternoon in Ottawa. It is the squad’s seventh consecutive perfect season, a streak which includes the first four NCWP championship titles and the final three OUA championship banners. The third-seeded Gee-Gees had upset the second-seeded Queen’s Gaels Saturday night to gain a spot in the title match. Ottawa used the adrenaline from that upset win to come after the Blues in the opening quarter, scoring first and taking leads of 1-0 and 2-1. It was the first time all season that the Blues had trailed twice in a game; however, Toronto fought back to tie the game 2-2 before the end of the opening period. The Blues offence then got untracked in the second quarter which, coupled with strong defensive play anchored by outstanding goalie Rachael Jaffe (Irvine, California), allowed the team to score four unanswered goals to lead 6-2 at the half. The Gee-Gees rebounded to win the third quarter 2-1 helped by the Blues inability to cash in easy score opportunities. The final frame was much like the second as the Blues popped in three unanswered goals and shut the Gee Gees out again.Senior co-captain Kassie Fraser (Vancouver) and sophomore Allie Vas (Yorba Linda, California) each netted a pair of goals to pace the Blues attack. Six Blues added singles: junior Masa Stojanovic (Toronto), sophomores Deena Charles (Fraser Valley, B.C.), Sara Sutherland (Regina) and Sarah Wentling (Mohnton, Pennsylvania) along with freshmen Kaitlyn Palmer (Ottawa) and Lauren Dundee (Perth, Scotland).Senior co-captain Jaffe and Dundee were named to the tournament all-star team. The Blues also swept the individual awards with Dundee named most outstanding player, Jaffe most outstanding goalie and head coach George Gross, Jr. outstanding coach. For more information, scores and highlights on your favourite U of T athletes and teams, please visit www.varsityblues.ca.
