President donates Rs 1 million to cop interdicted over unruly behaviour

President Maithripala Sirisena today donated Rs. 1 million to a policeman who was interdicted over his unruly behaviour earlier this month.Police Sergeant Sanath Gunawardena who was temporarily suspended after he protested over the releasing of a lorry transporting sand by the Thebuwana Police Officer In Charge (OIC) on October 3, met President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat, today. The Presidential Secretariat said that the donation was made considering the financial difficulties faced by the policeman and his family due to the suspension of his service. The Policeman was interdicted over his unruly behavior in Thebuwana which led to a tense situation. The Law and Order Ministry later said that the policeman was later interdicted over his behaviour. (Colombo Gazette) The Police Sergeant had staged a protest in the Thebuwana junction with his weapon, demanding that he be treated fairly.The Police Sergeant had threatened to commit suicide using his weapon and refused to negotiate a settlement with the Police. The Police Special Task Force (STF) was then deployed to the area and a senior officer attempted to negotiate with the policeman and get him to return his weapon and give up his protest.However the policemen refused to agree and eventually the STF and Police overpowered the policeman and brought the stand-off to an end.Gun shots were fired during the attempt to arrest the policeman but no one was injured. read more
